How do passive job seekers find jobs in this market with constant layoffs?
April 1, 2025 | by MuMo

Since 2022, layoffs in technology, media and finance industries have totaled 2.1 Million. While that number does not sounds large, relative to the total number of jobs in those industries, it is nearly 12%.

While there have been some companies hiring as well, job seekers find a much more competitive job market, with 100s of more applicants for each role, a higher bar for the “perfect candidate” and also lowered expectations for a salary increase with the new role.
We interviewed 19 individuals in the technology industry to ask how they got a new role and followed that up with a survey, which had 311 responses. Here are some results.
Over 52% leveraged their network to find a new role.

Since networking is a key part of the role, it is obvious that being well networked is a key to finding roles quickly or bouncing back after a layoff.
